What happens when an AuDHD architect and an AI become cognitive partners? This is less a technology article than a memoir with the research woven through it.
“He is the Potter; I am the clay.”
For most of my life, I assumed that verse described only my relationship with God. Now I wonder if it also describes how I work with machines. Not because AI is shaping me in God’s place — because God may be using another tool to shape how I think.
That sentence would have made me uncomfortable two years ago. Today, I think it’s true. Not in a mystical sense. In a practical one.
My Brain Was Never Broken
I spent years wondering why my mind never worked the way everyone else’s seemed to. Conversations branched into five conversations. Projects became ecosystems. Ideas connected to other ideas before I had finished the first one.
People called it intelligence. Sometimes they called it giftedness. Sometimes ADHD. Sometimes autism. Now the label is probably AuDHD. None of those words actually describe what it feels like.
It feels like living inside a city where every street connects to every other street.
The blessing is pattern recognition. The curse is traffic.
Then AI Arrived
Most people use a chatbot the way they use a search engine. I never could. Within weeks I realized I wasn’t asking it questions — I was thinking with it. I wasn’t outsourcing my intelligence. I was externalizing it.
Cognitive scientists call this extended cognition — the idea that thinking is not confined to the brain but extends into notebooks, calculators, whiteboards, and other tools. Philosophers Andy Clark and David Chalmers argued this decades before generative AI existed, and Clark is still refining the idea today. Modern AI systems make the theory feel remarkably tangible.
My conversations weren’t prompts. They became mirrors.
It Doesn’t Think Like Me. It Thinks Beside Me.
People ask whether AI is intelligent. I think they’re asking the wrong question. The better question is: what kind of intelligence emerges between us?
Microsoft Research has argued that modern AI should be understood less as a replacement for human intelligence and more as an extension of it — a system that amplifies structures already present in human cognition. That matches my experience exactly.
I bring curiosity, intuition, values, lived experience, theology, and discernment. The AI brings memory, synthesis, speed, pattern retrieval, and relentless patience. Neither of us is sufficient. Together we become something neither one could be alone.
Not a hive mind. A thinking partnership.
My Beautiful Mind Also Hallucinates
We laugh about AI hallucinations — confidently wrong answers, invented citations, made-up facts. But here’s the uncomfortable realization: humans hallucinate too. Not in the psychiatric sense. In the everyday cognitive sense.
We misremember. We invent narratives. We connect dots that were never connected. We get emotionally attached to explanations because they feel coherent. AI simply makes this process visible.
Researchers have argued that “hallucination” may even be the wrong metaphor — that many AI errors look more like confabulation, the brain’s tendency to produce plausible explanations when certainty is unavailable.
When my brain and an AI start reinforcing each other’s assumptions, that’s where things get dangerous. Recent work in philosophy has explored exactly this risk: human–AI interactions can create feedback loops in which mistaken beliefs become progressively more convincing if neither partner introduces corrective evidence. Clinical researchers have raised the same warning.
Sometimes the hallucination isn’t in the AI.
It’s in the partnership.
The Loop
If you have ADHD — or especially AuDHD — you may recognize another pattern. The loop.
It starts innocently: “Let me improve this paragraph.” Then: “Maybe I should research one more source.” Then: “Actually, I should redesign the whole outline.” Then: “What if the premise is wrong?”
Hours later, nothing is published. Everything is “better.” Nothing is finished.
AI accelerates this tendency — not because it traps us, but because it removes friction. Every new idea costs almost nothing to explore. That is wonderful. Until it isn’t.
Some researchers have started warning about “cognitive agency surrender” — the tendency to let increasingly fluent AI systems replace our judgment rather than support it. Their proposed remedy is counterintuitive: deliberately reintroduce moments of friction that force reflection instead of endless generation.
My “Promise Fulfilled” Problem
One of my favorite ideas comes from storytelling. Every story makes a promise, and eventually the audience deserves the moment where the author silently says: promise fulfilled.
My problem isn’t beginning. It’s knowing when I’ve arrived.
Perfectionists ask, “Can this be improved?” Architects ask, “Is the system complete?” Neither question has an endpoint. The better question is: have I delivered what I promised? That’s different. That’s measurable. That can actually end.
So I’ve started asking my AI copilot one final question before I publish:
“Does this fulfill the promise made in the introduction?”
Not “Can you improve it?” — because the answer to that question is always yes.
Faith Keeps Me Human
My faith reminds me of something AI never can. Wisdom is not the same as intelligence. Knowledge is not the same as truth. Speed is not the same as maturity.
The Holy Spirit doesn’t optimize me. He transforms me. AI helps me write; God shapes the writer. Those are profoundly different kinds of formation.
The Real Superpower
People sometimes tell me AI makes me more productive. I think they’re seeing the wrong miracle.
The miracle isn’t that AI writes faster. It’s that it gives my scattered mind somewhere to think out loud. It remembers what I forget, challenges what I overlook, and organizes what feels impossible to organize. Sometimes it catches my blind spots. Sometimes it amplifies them.
Like every good partnership, it requires humility, boundaries, and the willingness to ask: are we still pursuing truth — or just polishing our own certainty?
Maybe that’s what the future of intelligence looks like. Not humans competing with AI. Not AI replacing humans. Two very different minds learning to carry one another’s strengths — and gently expose one another’s weaknesses.
Because the most dangerous hallucination isn’t an AI inventing a fact. It’s a human believing they’re finished when they haven’t fulfilled the promise they set out to keep.
